Plastic Logic offer in-depth look at plastic electronics technology

Posted on July 02, 2012 by Dr Peter Harrop
Wearable Technology Europe 2015
Plastic Logic's Technology Centre in Cambridge offered media and analysts an in-depth look at their plastic electronics technology, flexible plastic displays in particular, and demonstrated some of the many potential commercial uses.

As well as getting up close and personal with the new technology, attendees got an exclusive private tour of the clean room where they witnessed a selection of manufacturing processes in action.

Plastic Logic provided various demonstrations throughout the day including a hands-on introduction to the recently showcased flexible plastic colour display. In addition, there were two other demonstrations that received a lot of praise from the visitors.

Firstly, the showcase of Plastic Logic's thinnest flexible display at just 130 microns drew admiration from the crowd. Hunter Skipworth from Pocket-Lint said, "the future is here" and went on to explain to his readers that "what was most impressive about the screens was that both were totally flexible because they are put together using Plastic Logic's clever plastic transistor tech. We could do things like wrap the e-paper round our arm and it would continue to play back content."

Secondly, Plastic Logic demonstrated, for the first time ever, a flexible plastic electronic display that can play colour video content at 12 frames per second (14fps in black and white), driven by OTFTs (organic thin film transistors).
