Third Generation Solar Energy Used For the first time in Brazil mall

The world's first Organic Photovoltaics (OPV) installation in a shopping mall was completed at Shopping da Bahia (SDB), in Salvador. The unprecedented project is the result of a partnership between Aliansce Sonae, Brazil's largest mall management company (SDB administrator), and Sunew, a Brazilian company that is a global leader in the manufacture of Organic Photovoltaic Films, which has adhered SUNEW FLEX™ to the entire skylight surface of the mall's third floor. Besides producing solar energy connected to the shopping mall's electrical grid, SUNEW FLEX™ manages brightness and increases thermal comfort. SUNEW FLEX™'s innovative technology is characterized by a thin, lightweight, flexible and durable film, made of non-toxic and recyclable materials, which turns sunlight into energy. Sunew's OPV differs from previous technologies due to its versatility. It enables energy generation on any surface, from skylights, building facades and carports, to vehicles and urban furniture. The material is customizable in size, shape and color, therefore enables clean energy generation without compromising the design of the buildings.
The installation in the skylight of the largest shopping center in Bahia is capable of blocking approximately 99% of ultraviolet and 75% of infrared radiation. As a result, the material provides greater thermal comfort in the environment, substantial savings in the air conditioning system and brightness control, maintaining an ideal level of transparency.
Beyond optimizing the energy management of enterprises with large flow of people, such as shopping centers, the use of SUNEW FLEX™ plays a key role in combating global warming as each square meter avoids the emission of 120 Kg of CO2 into the atmosphere per year. "Consumers are increasingly demanding an active role and concrete actions by companies in favor of sustainability," comments the maintenance manager of SDB, Antonio Carvalho.
"We have developed in Brazil this technology that is revolutionizing design and sustainable architecture. Our product differs from traditional solar energy technologies because its material is very light, flexible, beautiful and performs well on vertical surfaces," says Tiago Alves, CEO of Sunew, "It is gratifying to have partners such as Shopping da Bahia of Aliansce Sonae group in this ground-breaking project that contributes to the global trend of Green Buildings, seeking to neutralize the carbon footprint in large urban centers," he says.
Antônio Carvalho, from SDB, also reinforces that the public will perceive greater thermal comfort and brightness management, besides having visual access to the cleanest energy generation available and integrated to a modern design. "This innovation enables the shopping mall to stand out for following the concepts of retrofit, focused on modernizing and revitalizing spaces in accordance with new technologies and trends," he adds. 125 m² of SUNEW FLEX™ were applied to the glass ceiling that covers the third floor of the shopping center.
Sunew claims that through a fully sustainable production chain, its product is the greenest energy generation alternative and has the lowest carbon footprint among solar generation technologies. Sunew's OPV differs from previous technologies due to its versatility. It enables energy generation on any surface, from smart buildings glass facades to vehicles and urban furniture.
