The recently developed mass production process for hybrid electronics allows the launch of products that combine mobile phones and paper. For more information see the IDTechEx report on Printed, Organic and Flexible Electronics 2020-2030: Forecasts, Technologies, Markets.
For decades paper was the favourite carrier for data and information. Now electronic devices carry and transport information and data. And electronic media took over big shares of marketing budgets and lowered the importance of paper-based marketing.
"Paper marketing material got boring. People are spoiled by complex information offers and interactivity of electronic media. Paper cannot deliver that" Friedrich Eibensteiner is pointing to a hard reality of the printing industry. Continuing: "... but that is not the end of the paper story. We are solving this problem." prelonic launches a new product: With printed electronics and classical electronic components paper could be upgraded to a hybrid electronic media. Combinations of printed paper media and electronic devices could be realized with a newly developed process.
"We open a new world for marketing, games and training. Since the paper is connected to electronic media, very valuable data about reader behaviour can be collected and the interactivity traps potential customers."
This interactive paper is an NFC equipped printed product with push buttons at the printed content. These push buttons enable communication with a mobile phone via the NFC interface and as such boosting the capabilities of paper.
prelonic is now scaling up the process and selling these products through marketing partners.
prelonic technologies is developing integrated hybrid electronics products and processes therefore. The focus is on the integration of printed electronic elements and classical electronic elements via printing. The utilized printing technology is screen printing, but also gravure and flexo printing could be used. Such products are paper-thin, flexible and cheap and could be customized to every form and application.
