PhUV is the umbrella organization of companies & institutions which pioneered the electric vehicle industry in the Philippines.
Mr Rommel T. Juan, Vice President, PhUV Inc. says, "Ours was borne out of the deep, genuine desire to help address the worsening environmental pollution in our country particularly in the transport sector. Our transport industry (and the Philippines) is woefully dependent on fossil fuel (some 0.8 billion barrels consumed annually) particularly our jeepneys - the world-renowned iconic public transport system which feeds entirely on diesel. This alarming condition was our bugle call for the development and launch of a new transport alternative - the electric jeepney or eJeepney for short."
"Compared to other electric vehicle initiatives which focused on private units, ownership and usage, we purposely focused on a mass transport system that will benefit the greater masses of the Filipinos. We are a predominantly middle-to low income nation relying heavily on fuel-fed mass transports, mostly jeepneys and tricycles. To solve will be for the greatest good."
He tells Electric Vehicles Research, "We are quite proud of the fact that our unique eJeepney concept has earned the approval and admiration of experts, industry peers and institutions here and overseas. This system has been officially adopted by our two biggest metropolis capital city Quezon City & Makati, leading government agencies, NGOs, university campuses, commercial complexes/malls and even in Boracay, our world-famous tourist beach destination." He is particularly proud of the fact that Dr. Dan Kammen, Noble Prize-winning physicist and one of the world's leading authorities on power has recently said, in his Discovery Channel documentary "Ecopolis", that he adjudged the eJeepney as "...the best new modern mass transport technology with the best chance of saving the world's cities from the dangers of pollution."
To draw worldwide attention to this achievement, new Vice President Jejomar Binay had one especially built and rode on - breaking tradition- as the official Vice Presidential vehicle during his June 30, 2010 official Oath-Taking along with President Benigno C. Aquino III.
This success is complementary to the large hybrid buses that are now so popular in the West, with BAE Systems the global leader in hybrid bus powertrains, leveraging its activity in military and non miltary electric vehicles for land, sea and air. For example, Afs Trinity Power Corporations is producing advanced system architecture and fast ultracapacitor storage for similar vehicles.
Mr Rommel T. Juan notes that the Philippine electric vehicle industry is in its infancy stage. "We know & admit that we have a lot to learn from the First World - its leading authorities, companies, technologies and experiences. But perhaps, the First World can learn from the Third World, from the Philippines. From our innovative eJeepney approach to ecofriendly mass public transport. To help solve our heavy dependence on oil. To help protect our environment."
