Matsushita Electric Industrial Co plan to mass-produce 37-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs in three years reported the Japanese newspaper the Sankei Shimbun daily on Tuesday.

The paper also reported that Matsushita would start a production line exclusively for OLEDs at its new LCD panel factory that is being built in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, in western Japan.

Printed Electronics World reported earlier this year that the IPS Alpha plant in Chiba Prefecture which Matsushita has a 25% stake, is a possible site for the production of future OLED displays. Read Japanese electronics makers announce alliance in flat panel displays.

A Matsushita spokesman Akira Kadota has reportedly said that the company was considering the commercialization of OLED TVs in the future, but it had not decided on any details including the launch timing or size.

Sony launched their "XEL-1" 11-inch OLED TV in December last year. Also read Sony Japan launches world's first OLED TV .
