Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) are coming in three waves. The first is the now established $10 billion market in 2013, where OLEDs are used as displays in cellphones and other small portable electronics. As LCDs compete by moving to higher resolution, so do small sized OLED displays. This opens up new manufacturing opportunities for vacuum and additive processing, including mask based processes.
The second wave of OLED opportunity is OLED TVs - commercial this year and made in larger area sizes but at current price points they will be a small part of the market for the next two years. Printing or partly printing these displays is viable because the resolution is less than cellphone displays need, but only when technical challenges with printing are overcome. In parallel, organizations are selling OLED lighting - utilizing similar materials and equipment. Design of the luminaires is critical to their success versus completion from LED solid state lighting (SSL) and investment in LED R&D still outweighs that of OLEDs - but the same was true for OLED displays vs LCD displays six years ago.
According to IDTechEx research (http://www.IDTechEx.com/research), the OLED market and proportion of displays that are rigid and flexible is as follows.
OLED Displays 2013-2023
OLEDs LIVE! www.IDTEchEx.com/OLEDsLive is Europe's premier event covering all aspects of the technology and opportunity of this profitable and rapidly growing technology. Hosted by IDTechEx, OLEDs LIVE! will cover the market opportunities, challenges and technical progress from around the world, covering vacuum and solution processed OLEDs for displays and lighting: materials, deposition, TFT backplanes, scaling, market opportunities. It is a two day program dedicated to OLEDs. Attendees will develop a comprehensive and detailed understanding of the state of different technologies as we cover key topics including:
- Appraisal of applications and market trends
- Progress and unmet needs for vacuum and solution deposited materials - across the full OLED stack
- Manufacturing equipment, scale up and analysis of costs and yield
- TFT developments - metal oxides, graphene, CNTs, organic semiconductors (OSC), aSi
- Barrier film technologies
- Latest academic breakthroughs
- Competitive analysis - opportunity versus progress with LCDs and LEDs
- Progress by technology
Hear from leading organizations including Panasonic, Samsung, Philips, Applied Materials, Fraunhofer COMEDD, Terabarrier, Tokyo Institute of Technology and many more. This event brings together users, material providers, equipment makers, policy makers, academics and investors from around the world.
