Securing ID-Documents: Films from Epurex

Platilon® ID films enable sensitive electronic items to be directly embedded by means of efficient "R2R" (roll-to-roll) production technology.

Laser Marking with TPU-Films

Integrated process: embedding during R2R lamination

In this production process Platilon® ID films are heated by infrared light. The specific melting behaviour of Platilon® ID films lead to homogeneous softening up to a consistency like plasticine. The delicate electronic components and electrical connections are embedded in the highly viscous TPU melt and securely enclosed.
Roll to roll processing

Pre-laminate are securely enclosed by Platilon® TPU films

Once the material has cooled down, a permanently flexible bond is formed which withstands even high mechanical stresses and strains. In a second processing step the embedding material Platilon® ID can be bonded directly to various other substrates, e.g. Polycarbonate, PVC or Teslin.

Decoupling: Prolong lifetime of ID documents

The lifetime of ID documents, e.g. bank/ credit cards and driving licences can be extended by decoupling the rigid individual layers using Platilon® ID.

The conventional method of applying magnetic strips or chips on the outside surface of the card is increasingly being replaced by the method of embedding electronic components.

In this application TPU films help to optimize monolithic structures. Bonding together rigid and flexible elements decouples rigid materials.

Advantage: Stress cracks coming from the embedded module to the surface are intercepted by the soft interior film layers, thus helping to prevent that such failure shortens the lifetime of a card.

embedding of module: flexible TPU layers reduce stress cracking

The marking can be used as an additional security feature for the construction of ID documents. If an attempt is made to delaminate the ID document the adhesive layer - laser marked Platilon® ID - would be destroyed, making the card unusable.
